In January of this year, a new open to all club was created here at Grand Island Senior High School. Mrs. Boyer, the sponsor of this crochet club says, ‘’The reason why I became the sponsor is because a group of kids that asked me to do it were very energetic and excited about the possibility of a crochet club, and so seeing their excitement motivated me to want to help them out in trying to create a club that they could be a part of at GISH.’’

The person responsible for starting the club is freshman Whisper Engel. ‘’We had a similar club at our old school, and we wanted to bring that same experience here,’’ said Engel.

Talking about the club, senior Cassia Mayfield said, ‘’I like crocheting because it helps me feel happy, calm, and it generally grounds me.’’ Joining this club may help you find a way to escape the stress of school while also learning a new way to express yourself.

Students are provided with materials at club meetings, and because they aren’t assigned a project they are given full creative freedom. “I am currently making a skinny scarf. It will be long, but it is skinny in a sense that it is not super tall so it would fit a younger generation,’’ said Mayfield. ‘’If you like to create things like scarves, hats or even plushies you can come to this club and crochet and learn how to create these things from fellow classmates within the club.’’

For those who don’t have experience with the hobby, but want to learn, Engel is open to teaching them the art of crocheting. There have been five meetings so far, with new people showing up regularly.

Anyone and everyone is free to join by simply going to Room 10. Meetings are held every Wednesday/Thursday during blocks 4 and block 5 (Freshman Islander Time).
